About me
Acupuncture helped me — (I’m Alex Knox)— that’s why I know it can help you too.
I discovered acupuncture at a time when my life looked fine.
I had great work - writing and editing for major publications and companies. I had something to show for my efforts.
Yet my stamina was slipping. I was tired and wired at the same time. There were times when most days seemed grey.
When I decided to try treatment, I had no idea if it would make a difference.
But it did, And with dramatic effects.
The first thing that happened was that I felt seen and cared for by the practitioner. Then I simply felt better as the effect of the treatments built over a number of weeks. My mood soared. My stamina improved. Feeling better gave me the energy to reassess what I wanted for my life. That’s when I knew it was time to change careers.
My life-changing experience inspired me to help others in the same way that I was helped. Since 1999, people from diverse backgrounds and with all kinds of problems, have come to my clinic. Because ailments come in so many varieties, I've recognized that my education should be ongoing and my teachers should be the best in the profession.
My background includes:
A three-year Master's degree in acupuncture completed in 2-1/2 years from the Maryland University of Integrative Health (once known as The Traditional Acupuncture Institute).
Nationally certified by the National Council of Colleges of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.
Two years of post-graduate study with master practitioner and author Lonny Jarrett, M.Ac., L.Ac. (www.spiritpathpress.com).
18 months' ongoing study with renowned practitioners Kiiko Matsumoto (www.kiiko.com) and David Euler (www.davideuler.com).
Three years' additional training in healing to help uncover and resolve the hidden beliefs that can lock people into their suffering. This has proven liberating for those clients who wish to go behind the curtain of their issue, like Dorothy in Oz.
Advanced, specialized training in Denmark for serious pain and vision-loss conditions with John Boel (www.boel-akupunktur.com).
Advanced specialized training with the U.S. acupuncture expert in vision and eye conditions.
I hunt for the fastest and most effective approaches for my patients—even when they have a mystery condition that has evaded other treatments (or has none known outside of Chinese medicine). The people I study with are like me in this regard. They are persistent and pioneering.
People who enjoy their work tend to get involved in their professions. Here are my versions:
Co-founder of the Acupuncture Society of D.C.(www.dcacupuncture.org), for which I was the President for three years until January of 2015, representing the profession to D.C. City Council and the D.C. Board of Medicine.
A guest on the Diane Rehm Show in an interview titled Medical Acupuncture.
Spokesperson for the acupuncture profession to the FDA in hearings.
Published articles (www.AcupunctureToday.com).
Spear-headed a committee at a former national organization (AAOM).
Served on the Public Education Committee of the American Society of Acupuncturists (ASA), a national organization.
Over time it's become clear that regardless of achievement, the most important element is the life balance that makes for reliable health and contentment. In fact it was this medicine that started me on the way to claiming more of life's joys. In case you're wondering, those joys include oil painting and gardening.
I’ve gained a lot of expertise over the years. Each person who comes to me receives treatment in concert with their goals, so that they thrive not just in body, but in mind and spirit as well.
